£350,000,000 fund to close for applications in 2009, Foundation for Sport and the Arts
Although new applications will not be accepted after March 2009, awards will continue to be made up until the end of March 2012, bringing the programme to a close in the same year as the London Olympics. The Foundation for Sports and Arts was established in 1991 to channel money originally donated by Littlewoods and other football pools companies to benefit Sports and the Arts.
The FSA has been an extremely important source of funding over the years as one of the only major funders of sports activity and a generous supporter of the arts and have awarded grants worth over £350 million since they started.
The decision to cease activities was made following a review of the current level of reserves and in light of the fact that their only source of income is now the interest generated by those reserves.
